It's been about two hours since we entered the temple. It was just myself, Amatus, Benmor, and Darvin. Kevin left to help the scouts, and no one knew where Malik was. The temple still felt the same. Not really a surprise. It's always felt the same whenever I've been in it. We entered before dawn. It's probably for the best that the townsfolk don't see us walking into the haunted temple. Everyone started searching for something unusual; Mother Gram didn't really give us much information. For my part, I ended up in the little room where I found my amulet and got lost in my memories.
Amatus was the one who noticed a big slab of stone looked different from the rest of the floor. Benmor eventually found an old candlestick, and he and I used it to lift the slab out. It opened to a set of stairs leading down. As Benmor started to walk down them, torches along the walls lit up by magic. It was a little disconcerting. In any event, he kept walking down and suddenly, we all felt a wash of heat come up the stairs as the bottom was engulfed in fire. Benmor survived, but warned us that the last step was trapped. The three of us headed down and avoided the last step to meet back up. The room we were in was enormous. There were more magic torches lining the walls, but everything had rotted away. Everything except for a huge tapestry that stretched across the entire far wall. It looked like it had just been made, except is was blank.
We searched around and found three doors in the room. We followed the south door and ended up in some sort of ancient forge. Like the tapestry, the anvil and hammer looked as if they had never been used. There was some kind of Dwarven writing on them, but not even Amatus could read it. He said it was a very old style. We all agreed to leave it alone. Magic can be dangerous, especially magic we don't know how it works. Speaking of which, I found a magic ring in an old crumbling lockbox. We also found a small room with an altar of some sort in it and six pillars with small statues on them. A voice from nowhere spoke in a language none of us understood. It sounded like it was trying different languages until it finally spoke in the common tongue. It said "In the beginning, we were known for this." Amatus told us that the entire room was magic, and we agreed that it was expecting us to put one of the statues on the altar. We decided to search the other rooms to try and find more clues.
The next room we found was strange. It looked like a few halfling houses were moved underground, hills and all. Benmor and Amatus entered the room, and when Benmor tried to enter one of them, the voice came back and the door slammed shut and locked. I saw another door at the end of the hall and ran down to try to open it, but it had also locked. So I kicked it open. While I ran down the hall, I noticed another trap. Luckily, it had broken down. When I kicked the door open, there were some kind of creatures in the room. They looked like halflings, but their flesh was falling off and their bones were clearly showing. It was very disturbing. Our fight with them was short, but some kind of magic was causing lightning to strike us. Amatus seemed to have taken the brunt of the strikes. There was also some kind of other creature in the middle house that I don't know how to describe. After the fight, we returned to the main room to rest and bandage our wounds. I had only taken a few hits from the halflings' slings, so I spent most of the time studying the ring I found. I was able to figure out that it isn't dangerous and could be used to protect myself, so I've decided to use it. Something we noticed while resting was that the tapestry had changed. A part of it now showed a human ship being struck by lightning and humans killing halflings.
After the rest, we decided to explore the rest of the hallways before going into any more rooms. I think that there is something in each room we have to do that will show more of the tapestry. Maybe it will give us enough information for the altar room. I was leading us down a hallway when the walls slammed closed. I'm getting tired of these traps. I was able to avoid being crushed, but it still hurt. The rest of the group wrapped around and came up from the other side. I entered a room with closed portcullises and watched as they came up. At least my almost death was helpful; I opened the gates and noticed there was a patch of wall that looked different. Turns out I found a secret wall. Inside we found a chest with some potions and three pieces of ammunition; a sling stone, an arrow, and a bolt. They all had a skull etched onto them. We took them, but I'm hesitant to use them. The fact that there was only one of each is also weighing on my mind.
We've decided to leave and try to find Malik before continuing further through the temple. Kevin might have also returned.
